Life Around the Lake
The Sorabora experience is connected to the communities who live beside the water.
Sorabora is not a site we visit. It is a place people live and work in. The boats, the cooking, the guidance on the water and the food on the table come from the villages around the reservoir, and the experiences we offer are built with them.
Village life
The villages around Sorabora keep their own pace, set by water, weather and the working day. Guests are visitors within that rhythm, not spectators of it.
Food
Meals are cooked the way they are cooked here — over firewood, in clay pots, from what is available that week.
Agriculture
Paddy fields, home gardens and small plots depend on the water held by the tank. Much of what reaches the table grows within sight of the lake.
Local knowledge
Our boatmen read the water and the weather; our cooks know the ingredients and the season. That knowledge shapes every experience we offer.
Traditional cooking
Grinding, tempering, and slow cooking over a hearth. Where guests are welcome to watch, they are welcome to ask.
People
The people you meet are hosts and colleagues. We ask guests to photograph respectfully and always with permission.
The village table
From the village kitchen to the lakeside table.
The village picnic brings the two together: a traditional Sri Lankan meal, cooked locally and eaten slowly in a simple setting beside the water.
